Even though the teacher was obviously going to be participating in the tournament as a healer she didn't look stressed at all to the students coming into her classroom. In fact, her regular grin was even more excitable, the teacher incredibly stoked to have an excuse to treat grievous wounds.
There were a few new students that had no idea what to expect from the medicine department, and of course reacted strongly to the fact that they would be taught by a floating head, but the upperclassmen just laughed and took their seats while their younger peers were freaking out.

MDC 101: Introduction to Medicine

 Katja says:

"One of the things of the medicinal field that causes much sorrow is that sometimes, some diseases or injuries are not fixable, not curable, terminal." She closes her eyes and sighs before continuing, "When healers are confronted with this sort of situation, it is all we can do to ease the patient's suffering."
She gestures to the west side of the room, where all the locked cabinets were. "In the furthest left drawer you will find creatures that are locked in a state close to death that need to be eased somehow. When you choose your creature, it will unfreeze, so choose carefully.
This creature WILL die, so trying to prevent that is pointless. You are trying to give it the most peaceful death, and will be graded upon how much pain the creature felt as it passed from this world. I feel that it is better for you to learn this lesson quickly, to avoid endangering yourself or your patients by unnecessarily trying to extend their life when they are about to die anyway."

((Ease the pain and suffering of a dying creature. You may pick the disease/injury as well as what the creature actually is))

MDC 102: Identifying and Classifying

Katja says:

"Now the greenhouses are positively filled with medicinal and magical plants alike, and sometimes the two things coincide but that's a bit too easy and the potions professor doesn't seem to like me using his greenhouses very much anyway SO your assignment is to go into the forest and find a plant with medicinal properties. You may use any of the field guides found in the cupboards around the classroom, and there's plenty of guides in the library, even in the 100 level. The forest isn't too dangerous around this time of year, but you might want to go as a team anyway! None of you have taken field medicine so patching yourselves up out there might be a tad difficult!"

((Go into the forest and find a plant with medicinal properties. Bonus points if it is also magical!))

MDC 103: Medicinal Philosophy

Katja says:

"While some might believe this class to be boring, I think it's the most interesting of all of the classes you could possibly take here at Otherworlde!"
"It is in this class that you will learn about why humans do things the way they do, and why we don't have to follow those rules because we have different moralities than those creatures," there was a glint in her eyes that looked insane, but it quickly disappeared as she continued, "For your first assignment you will get to take a look at the base concept of the Hippocratic oath, primum non nocere, or, for those who didn't read ahead already, 'do no harm'. Medical professionals help, not harm, but why? Sometimes you have to injure to help! So your assignment is to find someone that looks like they've got a growth of something and cut it off of them!"
She floats down below her desk and hauls a box of something with her smoke on top of the desk, the box slamming down with the sound of metal jangling inside. "In this box you will find a dagger for your assignment. A gift for you! Just make sure you don't hurt anyone too badly, tending to the infirmary is always a headache."

((Find someone or something that looks like they've got an infection or cancerous growth or just about anything not "normal" and cut it off of them. You ARE helping them...right? Bonus: Bring the severed bit to Katja for her approval))

MDC 104: History of Medicine

Katja says:

"Something that many people don't realize is that for thousands of years, medicine has been more than just a science. It has been an art, tied deeply to the religious beliefs of the civilization using it. Stitching and poultices and chanting are all forms of old art, some of which used primitive forms of magic to heal, though nothing as effective as what we have now.
"Because the advances of medicine are so extreme and amazing, I want you to write about a disease that we now know incredible amounts of information about that previously terrorized millions. The bubonic plague.
"Specifically, I want you to write about how the spread of the disease was prevented by the quarantine procedures and the garb they wore, and how that translates into modern day procedures. It'll be a boring first assignment, but you'll want to complete it or else." Her grin was positively evil at this last statement, and you know she means business.

((Your student needs to write up something about how plague doctors and quarantine were effective, though you don't have to write about it yourself. You can show the process of them getting there!))

MDC 203: Magic in Medicine

Katja says:

"As you may know, magic is a very helpful addition to traditional medicine, especially if you are naturally gifted in healing or don't actually have any medical training. In fact, there's a few departments in this school that offer classes that involve various kinds of healing or other sorts of ways to fix yourself up that have nothing to do with the medicine department! To start this class off I want the two of you to give me some examples of where in this school you can find healing classes outside of my wonderful department. Feel free to give your opinion on those classes, and potential pros and cons to taking those classes instead of taking classes from me!"

((Have your student provide at least 3 examples of types of magic that can be used for healing. Basically anything that isn't explicitly the medicine department can work, as well as types of field medicine that involve a creature's own healing abilities))

MDC 204: Introduction to Off-hand Medicine

Katja says:

"There are some who consider unconventional medicinal practices 'mad' and I say to ignore them! What's the point in learning about things like limb transplantation if you restrict yourself to transplanting things onto patients that are missing those bits? Imagine how useful an extra arm could be, or being able to have proper horns instead of the strange body modification that humans sometimes do, or being able to replace your eyes with the eyes of an owl or a cat!"
She pauses, thinking about these prospects with a sparkle in her eye, before continuing, "Of course before I get ahead of myself, you have to learn how to not only remove a limb or body part but also make sure it doesn't start rotting. It would be unfortunate if you removed a limb only to have it decompose before you can attach it to the patient. So your assignment is to find someone willing to donate a body part to the furthering of medical science, and then to preserve that limb! Just let me know if you need to find the formaldehyde, I'm certain it's around here somewhere..."

((Find a limb or other body part donor. It can be as small as a finger or as large as an entire leg :D (Big Grin) ))

MDC 301: Advanced Medicine

Katja says:

"Now, a lot of people might believe this class to be just a stepping stone to being able to perform surgery, but that way of thinking is potentially very harmful towards the individuals that would need surgery from  you. Prepping for surgery and being able to provide proper aftercare is more important than the surgery itself, though I would never just give someone a scalpel and say have at it, as the entire process is a very difficult one. As you've learned in past classes, things like infections or poorly performed surgeries can kill someone whose health is already impaired, and it is your duty as a future doctor to try your best to avoid killing your patients." She leans forward, a little smile on her face and a small wink before continuing, "So! Your first assignment is going to be about what to do if something goes wrong. You're going to be using the mannequins again, which will be set up in the infirmary. When you next go in there your test will start with something going wrong with the mannequin. If you fail to stabilize your 'patient' then you will get to try again later, but I advise you do your best to get it right the first time as there's no telling how much harder the test will get over time.

((Stabilize a mannequin whose life signs are failing. All equipment that would be found in a regular mundane hospital will be accessible))

MDC 303: Grafting and Mutation

Katja says:

"One thing you may be aware of already is how sometimes transplants fail. This is typically due to the patient's immune system combating what it believes to be a threat, because the tissue has already started going necrotic due to improper storage, or most often just the patient's body rejecting the transplant in general. This can cause many problems for both patient and doctor, most stressful of which being the need to find a new donor. To avoid that I've been researching how to guarantee transplants, and I've come to some interesting conclusions," she looks at Casper who just seems to be stressed out about a variety of things and decides to continue before he completely tunes her out, "Which I can talk about at a later date. What you will get to do is test out my theory, that all you need to do in order to guarantee a transplant is to modify the DNA involved to match the patient's DNA! I myself will be your patient, and so you will use my DNA in order to adapt a partial torso that I have in storage to be fitting to attach me to! Isn't that exciting??"

((Change the DNA in a partial torso to match Katja's to the degree that it won't be rejected. Attaching this body part will be in a future lesson))
